the sacrifice
"the sacrifice and the consequence" by jin yuen examines the emotional and cultural complexities tied to immigration, particularly the sacrifices made by migrants and their families. through this work, yuen highlights the tensions between the hopes for a better life in a new country and the burdens these sacrifices place on future generations.
the artwork delves into how the migration journey—often filled with personal loss, cultural alienation, and unmet expectations—can have far-reaching consequences for both the individual and their family members.

the consequence
in this piece, yuen addresses how the trauma and emotional cost of immigration are often passed down through generations, creating a cycle of unspoken pain. the sacrifices made by previous generations, such as leaving behind family and culture, are compounded by the challenges of adapting to a new society, often leading to feelings of isolation, loss of identity, and unresolved grief.
yuen's work invites reflection on how these experiences, though invisible, shape family dynamics, cultural identity, and individual well-being.
by focusing on the tension between sacrifice and consequence, yuen's installation challenges viewers to reconsider the lasting emotional effects of migration, particularly the intergenerational impact on children who inherit the legacy of their parents' choices
